What it covers

The work itself

Registered cablers who want to take on more kinds of work, and employers who keep having to subcontract the fibre or coax parts of a job.

Structured cabling

Data and voice to standard, in racks and across floors, with the labelling and documentation that gets inspected.

Coaxial

The endorsement that covers MATV, CCTV and the coaxial work that still turns up constantly.

Optical fibre

Splicing, terminating and testing fibre — the endorsement that opens up the work most cablers are turning away.

Testing and certification

Proving each medium with the right test gear and producing results a head contractor will accept.

The detail

What the skill set is
A nationally recognised set of units that sits on top of an open cabler registration and adds endorsements to it. Eight units. The four open registration units — ICTTEN202, ICTWHS204, ICTTEN208 and ICTCBL247 — plus ICTCBL301, ICTCBL303, ICTCBL322 and ICTCBL323, which carry the structured, coaxial and optical fibre endorsements and the testing that goes with them.
Funding and eligibility
Eligibility is worked out per student and takes about five minutes on the phone. Broadly it depends on where you live, your work situation and what you have studied before — but the criteria reach further than most people assume, so it is worth asking before you write it off. We will tell you either way. We check your eligibility with you before you enrol, and it takes a couple of minutes — residency, what you are doing for work, and what you have studied before all come into it. The rules are broader than most people expect, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
What you need first
An open cabler registration. Not a prerequisite, because the open registration units are inside this skill set already. If you are starting from nothing you do the lot; if you are already registered, you only need the endorsement half of it.
Dates and how to enrol
We run the endorsement courses on scheduled dates throughout the year — the individual course pages carry the next sessions. Either. It books as two modules — ACMA Open Registration and Combined Cabling Endorsements — so you can take them together or do the open registration now and the endorsements later. Both course pages carry their own dates.
Recognition of prior learning
If you have been doing the work for years, Recognition of Prior Learning and our Fast Track programs can cut down what you actually have to sit. Bring job records, photos, test results and a supervisor who will vouch for the work.
Fees
Fees are set by the Department of Training and Workforce Development, not by us. This skill set is 250 nominal hours at the Lower fees, local skills rate — $1.62 per nominal hour — so the full course fee is $405, or $120 if you hold a concession. You are charged for each unit as you start it. Employers often pay for a staff member, but that is between you and them — we invoice whoever is named on the enrolment.
